I want a great big dressing room where I can display all of my favorite things.

I'll have ballgowns laying out, colorful cowboy boots, a fire place, a chandelier, flowers, dozens of shoes, and wainscoting and a great big gilded mirror stuffed in the corner. Beautiful. Lovely turquoise beads, vintage rhinestone bracelets, cushions, roses, and a hand held mirror sprawled across the vanity.

I WON A FREAKING CONTEST

Today was a very good day:

1. There was no school, or at least I didn't have to go to school (my school's testing its online correspondence system.)

2. I woke up really early and took a wonderfully long drive in the countryside looking at all the beautiful trees changing colors, the late summer flowers, the petite antique houses, and the swelling pumpkins.

(drum roll, please)
3. I was chosen out of 576 commenters to win a £59.99 satchel in a contest on one of my favorite blogs.

Excuse my language in the title, but as one may be able to see, I am a little excited. I won a contest. That's never happened to me. About a week ago I entered the Cambridge Satchel Company contest on What I Wore. We were asked to pick one of the satchels from the company's website and describe what we would wear it with. I chose this beautiful yellow satchel and described it like this:

The greatest thing about this bag is that I could use it for so many things - carrying books between classes, sneaking snacks into the movie theatre with friends on a Saturday afternoon, and using it as a stylish alternative to my currently worn out carry-on bag for flights. The first outfit I’d construct around this golden delight would start with my delicate cream lace dress from Anthropologie, layered upon by my warm faux fur vest from BB Dakota. My legs would be encased in opaque black tights and my tall vintage beige boots would sound lovely crunching the fallen leaves below my feet. With my happy yellow satchel hanging at my side, I would go on walks through town and in the woods admiring the beautiful change of colors in the trees and reminiscing on the past summer’s golden sun[ny] weather.

It's a bit precocious, yes, but I really wanted to win and I wasn't sure if the winner was randomly selected, so I spent a lot of time coming up with a response. I meant ever word of it though. When I turned on my computer today to procrastinate from doing my homework, I immediately went to check my blogger subscriptions since I hadn't done that in a few days. And there it was: I saw my name in connection with the announcement of the winner of a 15" yellow satchel. It took a good ten seconds for what I was reading to sink in, but then I jumped off my chair and started yelling around the house at the top of my lungs "Oh my God!" over and over until I was hoarse. There was some impressive 'happy dance' jumping thrown in there too. It's a good thing that I was home alone today or else I would have scared my mom to death.

Since I've never won anything before so I wasn't expecting much from the results of this contest. It caught me so off guard! I'm really grateful to Jessica of What I Wore and Julie of the Cambridge Company for holding this contest; they made my day.

I think it's not far from the truth to say that I am obsessed with Anthropologie's fall collection.
I think I'll ask for the Tuscan Rooftop Satchel for my birthday or Christmas or buy it for myself when I get a job, since I need another nice purse other than pink.
Don't those wonderful shoes just look like lemon drops?! Need. Especially since I feel that all my everyday shoes are falling apart.
These are simply darling! Instead of wearing your heart on your sleeve, you get to wear them on your vamp!

More Weardrobe conference snooping: What really caught my attention about this photo were the Vivienne Westwood shoes that I've been coveting for the past few months. I really love the quail dress that Audrey of Home Run Ballerina is wearing too. She posted about buying the dress back in August, and it's still available over at Buy Definition, but it's way too expensive for something I wouldn't wear that often and it only comes in medium, so I think I might attempt making something similar too it. I know I'm always saying that I'll sew something together, but this time, the goal is so simple, that maybe I will. Who knows. I still need something to wear to Wicked tomorrow night...

Tiptoeing Through the Tepees

This picture reminded me a lot of my uncle and aunt's backyard. A few years ago for the family reunion at their house, my aunt set up two large tepees in their sprawling expanse of backyard to offer more sleeping space for the relatives. She had painted a few Native American-esque pictures of buffalo and horse on their sides. Since then, she's sold the smaller one, but every year she invites her grandchildren and my uncle's grandchildren to camp out in the large tepee for a whole week. The rules are that no one can go inside the house though, except to use the bathroom and shower. When they were visiting our house last May after they'd gotten off another cruise to Alaska, my uncle's wife invited me to come, but it was one of those half empty invitations that someone gives you just so they can keep talking about it in front of you and you don't feel left out. It does look life fun though.

Over the summer I practiced my French by reading several untranslated French blogs. One of my favorites was le blog de Betty. I first discovered her from lookbook, but now I'm an avid follower. Although I'm not a fan of the shredded tee shirt look that I've seen around a lot this season, and which Betty has posted about, she more than often pulls off something so devastatingly chic that I just want to fly to France and stalk her whenever she goes shopping.I mean COME ON! Are you even looking at that jacket? Or at those boots? They're perection, but only better - since they're French.

Her hair looks so soft and touchable. And look at those nails! I love how she brings random bits of the unexpected into each outfit; often feautring touches of hot pink.

I positively adore this picture from Jane Aldridge's mother's blog. Since she was featured in Teen Vogue several months ago wearing that the same Prada skirt (without the petticoat) (can be seen here), I've been on the hunt for a similar perfect plaid whenever I go to fabric stores. A good plaid is so hard to come by; either you look like you're doing 90s grunge, you shop at Hot Topic, or you go to a parochial elementary school (I speak from experience.) Ebay has a couple of the designer skirts up, but they 1. all seem to be size 2/4s and they 3. are $200+. I can still like it though. And those shoes... .... ... :)

I love summer flowers. This reminded me of the summer that my family went to visit my aunt in Colorado. She lived in the middle of a grouping of hills that were full of beautiful summer wildflowers. Edit 9/18/09: Too bad I returned the pink and black dress and the black Chinese Laundry shoes. I didn't like the material of the pink dress, the black dress was too short for school, and the shoes were too narrow. I love the purple boots though, but they smell sort of bad, like moth balls. And the tights are a vision! I wore them last Sunday to see Wicked at the Paramount.

I like the Kate Spade owl tote launching this September, but not enough to fork out +$300 for it.

Instead, Topshop has a another version that is much cuter in my opinion. This one you can just drape over your body. At a mere $44 I'm much more inclined to get this; however, at only 15cm tall (6in...) I'm not so sure it's perfect. It's cute alright, but it couldn't really hold much.
I guess I conclude that it's not really for me. I'll have to get my funky purse kicks from my camera bag {a knockoff of this that I prefer to the original}

Caldwell Home recently posted about the Hotel du Petit Moulin with some pictures. I love the way the books fit into this little cubby as though it were made just for them. The way the books are crooked, leaning on each other make you think that the shelves are too; it's sort of like Alice in Wonderland.

Time for everyone's favorite game, Stuff That Looks Like Other Stuff! Let the repetitions commence:
What came first? Neiman Marcus' Tie Neck Silk Dress or Modcloth's Bow-jito Skirt? I like the skirt option better because it's simpler than the dress but it could be dressed up if need be with a simple twisted halter top.

Hervé Léger's Color-block Bandage Dress is reminiscent of Modcloth's Raspberritini Dress although they don't have the same shape. The similar color pattern is enough to do it.
The circle of fashion: 1. This black and white Alice + Olivia dress reminds me of 2.this middle Roksanda Ilincic dress which is 3. very similar to Modcloth's Chic Top that has pleating like on 1.the Alice + Olivia dress....

Anthropologie

I'm intending on heading into the city on Friday so I can pick up some flowers from the market for Saturday so of course I have plans to make a detour at Anthropologie. Last time I was there I was fiddling around with their naturally designed perfumes and I discovered that I really liked the barely there type of perfume. I don't remember which one, but I really loved the fresh aroma to one of the Whoearth bottles. They are $50 after sale, so I'm not as much in love with it, but I've been looking for something a simpler alternative to the great selection of body sprays that I have. It was funny that for my birthday about half of my friends got me the perfume alternative. Do I smell or something? Although I'll spritz them on occasionally, I find them too heavy and floral. I love the smell of a nice bouquet, don't get me wrong, but after awhile the smell of a super floral body wash gets just as old to me as a dying bouquet. For almost two years now I've been using Vera Wang's Princess perfume, which is much more to my liking, but I can tell that after this year, I'll be going in a different direction. Maybe this direction.

Vintage Dress Hunting

This is sort of the perfect dress; for what I want to wear to my party of Saturday, that is. I'm still at a total loss for what I'm going to wear and I really don't want to give up and go for one of the boring dark dresses that I already have. The only problem with this dress is that 1. it's $300, and 2. it's sold out. My mom (who's post-designer sewing skills are far superior to mine) could probably make something sort of like this, but I feel that it's way too late to ask her to make me something this complicated, this late in the game. I'll have to go scour thrift shops tomorrow looking for something appropriate.

I also found a few options on ModCloth that I like, but yet, aren't perfect.

This little black one is totally adorable and ever so Deschanel, but it's too dark for a summer party. It will be great to wear during the fall at school if I choose to buy it though!

This is a bit more what I'm looking for. It's light, it's blue, it even has the vintage lace. What I'm a bit weary about is the neckline. As my mom pointed out to me, it would look a bit silly if I ever wanted to wear it to school; I'd have to pile on a few camisoles underneath it to have it pass my school's dress code.

Sure, the quote is important, but what really got my attention here was 1. the white collar contrasting with the red body of the cardigan, and 2. the leaf. I love fall/autumn for all the leaves turning different colors. I'm going to go on a bike ride tomorrow in the woods and collect a bunch of leaves I think.

I often wonder about what inventions we might wonder what we ever lived with out. Maybe this will one day be one of them:

Scientists are closing in on a technology that would convert flowing blood into energy that could charge personal electronic devices.

Tiny zinc-oxide nanowires, some of which are only 1/5000 the diameter of a human hair, are able to produce an electrical current when subjected to low-frequency vibrations. These nanowires can be grown on most surfaces, including clothing, and the friction from pumping blood, body movements, or a gentle breeze would be enough to get them generating a significant amount of power.

Not only would this technology allow you to charge an iPod anywhere, but it is expected to enhance the capabilities of soldiers who are based away from traditional energy sources. As of yet, there is no timetable for its commercial production.

Today I went first to Plato's Closet to sell some of my old clothes to make some more room in my closet for my back to school shopping and then to Cost Plus World Market to look for some inspiration for my party on Friday. I'd never noticed their great selection of alternative and foreign foods. I'm defentley going to drag my mom there one of these nights so we can stock up to feed all the guests in a traditionally quaint tea-party manner. I bought a packet of Razzles because I'd heard them mentioned in one of the videos made by my British YouTube subscriptions, but to be frank, they were disgusting. I do like the wooden fans I bought for table decorations, though. I'd already had two, but one was broken and I don't want mine to get broken. I love the World Market for several reasons: 1. It always smells really good from the Indian and African spices, 2. AIR CONDITIONING! That puts even the sleaziest of places in my good books on days like today (88 degrees!), 3. It has lots of cheaply priced trinkets (that look like they are) from around the world in the form of jewelry, wooden boxes, candles, and paper supplies. I really wanted to buy a few string of colorful paper lanterns to hang through the aspens in the dropoff from our property, but they were either too big or too small and way too expensive for something I'd only be using once. Instead, I think I'll try to copy this look from the picture above. Not as exotic, but little balloons will add some color to the landscape just the same. While looking around the store I saw these beautiful lanterns, but who am I kidding? I really don't want to think about what it would cost me to get 50 or so of these.

I fell upon this the other day and I fell in love. I mean... when I first saw this I just let out a long breath, it was so beautiful. Sometimes I look at my closet and think that I've got it pretty good, but then one look at this... I really shouldn't think about that or else I'll go on a non-back-to-school-related shopping spree. Embarrassed Screen Freeze

The script for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets originally said that Hermione would hug Harry and Ron in the final scene. As the then 11-year-old Emma Watson was embarrassed about having to hug the boys in front of the entire cast, Chris Columbus allowed her to change the scene so that Hermione just hugs Harry then starts to hug Ron but the two get embarrassed and resolve to only shake hands. Watson also stated in a recent interview that she kept letting Daniel Radcliffe go too quickly, so the film was “frozen” for a few seconds to make the hug look like it lasted longer than it actually did.

On Pink Frilly Dresses

It's no secret that I'm a sucker for a really good dress, but when it comes to the super frilly number, I nitpick over the smallest details. Lately I've been wanting a sort of raspberry smoothie pink dress and these are some of my favorite options. They're all similar with the light pink body and white lace details, but I think I like the one in the middle best. First of all, it's the most casual, so I could get away with wearing it the most. I think it needs a belt of some sort though if I were going to wear it because the drop skirt doesn't look good on most people, let alone me. The sashed dress on the left is nice, but the tiered style doesn't do me any favors.
And on the dress on the right, I don't like the wrap around quality of of the cleavage and my cat would devour the hem on it; all the lace details on it are just a bit overwhelming too.

I've been seeing bird's egg blue mopeds everywhere lately. I first noticed a really nice one at the Mill Creek Town Festival a few weeks ago and I fell in love with it, walking past that part of the street several times just so I could get a better look at it. It's riders' were wearing tangerine helmets- so cute! I love the red seat detail on the one above especially, because it's so patriotic looking, but I'd settle for any vintage looking one.

I somehow stumbled upon this article in one of my link clicking, tab opening marathons and it just spoke to me. Interestingly enough, I was reading Audrey Hepburn's Wikipedia page just a couple of weeks ago, but I learned several things upon reading this that I didn't know beforehand (like the deer.)

In defense of Audrey Hepburn

I know that because there is so much hype surrounding her, people seem to dismiss the eternally lovely Audrey Hepburn as an overrated beauty who couldn't’t dress, dance or act. They’re wrong! I think it is silly to focus on the hype surrounding someone and use that to make up your mind about someone when you could actually, you know, focus on them and their work. Here are some reasons why Audrey Hepburn is the shiznit.

She could actually act
If you have watched Roman Holiday you will know what I mean. She won an Oscar for her acting. Although back in the day acting roles for women weren’t that diverse, Audrey slayed that proverbial dragon with her kick-ass acting. One of my favourite scenes from Roman Holiday demonstrates this nicely.
She triumphed against her circumstances
Snitched form her Wikipedia page: “In 1935, her parents divorced and her father, a Nazi sympathizer, left the family. Both parents were members of the British nion of Fascists in the mid-1930s according to Unity Mitford, a friend of Ella van Heemstra and a follower of Adolf Hitler.
She later called her father’s abandonment the most traumatic moment of her life. Years later, she located him in Dublin through the Red Cross. Although he remained emotionally detached, she stayed in contact with him and supported him financially until his death.

In 1939, her mother moved her and her two half-brothers to their grandfather’s home in Arnhem in the Netherlands, believing the Netherlands would be safe from German attack. Hepburn attended the Arnhem Conservatory from 1939 to 1945, where she trained in ballet along with the standard school curriculum. In 1940, the Germans invaded the Netherlands. During the German occupation, Hepburn adopted the pseudonym Edda van Heemstra, modifying her mother’s documents because an ‘English sounding’ name was considered dangerous. This was never her legal name. The name Edda was a version of her mother’s name Ella.

By 1944, Hepburn had become a proficient ballerina. She secretly danced for groups of people to collect money for the Dutch resistance. She later said, “The best audience I ever had made not a single sound at the end of my performances.”After the Allied landing on D-Day, living conditions grew worse, and Arnhem was subsequently devastated by Allied artillery fire that was part of Operation Market Garden. During the Dutch famine that followed, over the winter of 1944, the Germans blocked the resupply routes of Dutch people’s already limited food and fuel supplies as retaliation for railway strikes that were held to hinder the German occupation. People starved and froze to death in the streets. Hepburn and many others resorted to making flour out of tulip bulbs to bake cakes and biscuits.”

Okay, even when she was practically starving to death she found a way to make the people around her happy and make money. Badass!

She was charming and lovely all the time
If you can find a single piece of media material that clearly proves Audrey Hepburn has done something nasty or mean-spirited, I will give you my left breast. In this interview the reporter tries to make her talk shit about her peers. Does she fall for the bait? No way, she’s Audrey fucking Hepburn! Check out this video when she accepts the Oscar, in which she proceeds to be a total cutie who is humble and grateful and everyone just dies because they want to be her best friend and cuddle with her under trees in mid summer and say charming things about her to everyone and get a boyish haircut.

Givenchy and her were BFFs
So the story goes that Audrey went to Paris to pick out some designs for a new movie that Givenchy, an up and coming designer at the time, had created. Givenchy thought that Katherine Hepburn was coming over, but fell madly in love with Audreys unique look anyway when he saw her. Who wouldn’t? He designed the LBD she wore in Breakfast At Tiffanys.

Which brings me to my next point…
She was a style icon
So you say “All she did was wear a little black dress”. Interesting point!

And by that, I mean fuck you.

It’s all about context! Have a gander at her fellow actresses at the time. Marylin Monroe. Ava Gardner. Natalie Wood. They were voluptuous and upfront with their sexuality and although there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, Audrey brought a new kind of sexy to the table. It was less obvious. While the other starlets had this va-va-voom image going for them, Audrey was simpler and made things like capris, boyish haircuts, full skirts, cap sleeved shirts and ballet flats popular. You see outfits with these things every day, and that’s because of her influence as a style icon. Bottom line, in a world of cone bras and dramatic gowns, Audrey Hepburn was different. And it was fucking adorable, as well as timeless. Which is why so many people (Myself included!) think of Audrey Hepburn when someone says the word ‘style’.
She worked for UNICEF
Audrey spent a good portion of her life helping people. She was a goodwill ambassador (Badassador?), and spent plenty of time in places like Ethiopia giving hands on help to disadvantaged communities. She said this about the trip: “I went into rebel country and saw mothers and their children who had walked for ten days, even three weeks, looking for food, settling onto the desert floor into makeshift camps where they may die. Horrible. That image is too much for me. The ‘Third World’ is a term I don’t like very much, because we’re all one world. I want people to know that the largest part of humanity is suffering,”
She had a fucking pet deer
Okay, who do you know that has a pet deer? She totally went shopping with it and stuff.

Audrey Hepburn's legacy goes beyond the clothes on her back. She was a good-hearted person her entire life. So the next time you think of going “Audrey was overrated lolz” think about her as a person, actress, style icon, goodwill ambassador and overall lovely person and don’t just knee-jerk against the hype.

Something that authors do that annoys me is when they make their characters always end up in their hometown. The only part about 'The Book Thief' that I felt disappointed about was how Leisel ended up in Sydney, Australia after growing up in Germany when she met Death. It seemed a bit too predictable to me.

I love the language that Markus Zuzak writes in. I'm planning to read his other books very soon. Oh, look. I've gotten off topic. Again. :)
